Deaf Throes [6min 01sek] | |
| Author : Per Teljer (Sweden) | ||
| Language : No sound (they are deaf) | ||
| Genre : Art Video | ||
| First Broadcasted : 25.10.05 |
FlatTV
broadcasts the video "Deaf Throes" by Swedish artist Per Telje,
now living and working in Berlin Germany.
It's recommended to watch the video in the "1024k" Windows Mediaplayer edition, because the video need a good picture quality. This edition demands a 1024K DSL connection (or better), if you only have 256k DSL/Cable please use this edition.
Flash Player edition is for Mac (and PC) users.
(for old fashion telephone 56k modems, use the 256k version, it will download but it will take some time ....)
Per Teljers comment on his project "South of Heaven" :
"The
project South of Heaven, which was begun in autumn 2001, aims to bring together
an as yet unknown number of self-contained video works. What all these works
have in common (as the title suggests) is a particular view of, and reaction to,
the collective and individual mental condition of the (western) world. In due
course, these works will add up to a kind of spiritual odyssey.
South of Heaven, Chapter 1 (2003), the first of these independent videos, is a
reaction to a society in which people live under constant pressure to prove
themselves. In this society, egoism, indifference, nervous breakdown, heart
failure, manic depression and self-abuse are the manifest building blocks of the
temple we build as a place to worship ourselves".

Jennifer grow up in Ohio, but now lives and work in Chicago.
It's recommended to watch the video in the "(A)DSL" Windows Mediaplayer edition, because the video need a good picture quality. This edition demands a 256K DSL connection (or better).
The 56K edition is suitable for normal old stile telephone
modems. The quality of the 56K stream is not as good as the (A)DSL version.
Flash Player edition is for Mac (and PC) users.
I first watched this video in 1996, it was broadcasted by satellite over Europe form 3Sat (German Culture TV channel).
The
video was nominated under "The International media art prize" in
Germany www.medienkunstpreis.de
The
video has screened on; PS1, Whitney, ZKM ++.
"White
Trash Girl - The Devil Inside" is the first in a series of 3 videos. The
Videos concerns the concept "White Trash Girl" and different forms of
"suppression".
Jennifer
has the idea that: "It is necessary to include both; sex, class (in a
Marxistic manner) and race, to understand and overcome suppression.
The
Videos:
Nr.1 "The Devil Inside" (This video) (1996)
White Trash Girl get introduced, we get her unpleasant and scary history about her upbringing, and where she comes from.
Nr.2 "Natural Born Cocksuckers" (1996)
A video about "Scrappy" A woman with a "bad attitude".
Scrappy takes no shit ! But... . a big corporate retail chain, attempt to turn her land into a parking lot... . Jennifer say about this
video: "This is my attempt to counter-capitalist story telling".
Nr.3
"Law Of Desire" (1997)
A video about a Chicana sex worker with an
abusive boss, and a dead boyfriend.
Jennifer has a realistic understanding of suppression and power, witch I fully support.
Without
both; class, sex, and race in your analyses, it is without meaning to talk about
misrepresentation and suppression.
In the many films/videos Jennifer has made, she shows special interest in; Hierarchy, power, histories, youth, sexuality, boredom, sadness, and sex.

It's recommended to watch the video in the "(A)DSL" Windows Mediaplayer edition, because the video need a good picture quality. This edition demands a 256K DSL connection (or better).
FlatTV shows solidarity to the poor (like FlatTV itself) and therefore broadcasts the video in a 56K edition too, this edition is suitable for normal old stile telephone modems.
Gallery Asbaek wrote about this video:
This video is a chilling visit to an old ghost house.
The house which used to be a well known big marxist commune in the 70'es (called "Smiling Suzy" from the title of a pop song) is now abandoned after the demise of the commune and has completely fallen apart. Only the old ghosts from the past haunts the house now and it stands empty apart from the occasional drug addicts and transients who crash in the old house.
The artist breaks into this house and films his experience, walking through the forlorn and scary rooms. The video shows the house as a strange and ghostly place, a universe with constantly changing and fluid contours and dream-like tableaux.
